With great care, the young woman packed the delicate, breakable items into her backpack.  She was going to be on the road for months and needed to take just the most essential items, and yet she knew she couldn’t leave these behind.

Two tea cups

Sarah, a missionary with Youth with a Mission, wrapped the dainty, china teacups and packed them between layers of clothing. Over the ensuing months, Sarah travelled to remote jungle outstations and inner city missions.  After finally arriving at each destination, she would carefully unpack the cups from her well-used backpack and look for the right opportunity to use them. 

How could these two cups be used to touch lives?

Sarah invited tired aid workers to take a moment out of their demanding schedules to sit outside her tent and drink tea while they unburdened themselves to someone who was willing to take time to listen and pray. Young women living in abject poverty smiled with delight as Sarah filled the pretty cups with steaming tea, welcoming them to share their story and their struggles. Homesick missionaries were refreshed by the familiar as they wrapped their hands around the smooth china, sipping tea and reminiscing of home against the jungle backdrop.

It didn’t matter whether it was coconut juice, yerba mate, a pungent herbal brew or Darjeeling tea that filled the cup. And the invitation was not to the Ritz Carlton or a perfectly set-up home.

The Golden Thread that Sarah gave was the treasure of time and the seldom-offered gift of undivided attention. She created a space where people were invited to come and be, to open their hearts and slow down, even for just a few minutes.  She cared about those with whom she was meeting and created a place of welcome and safety.  She wanted her guests to leave refreshed and encouraged.

And then she added the Silver Thread, the small touch of beauty, designed to show the worth and value of each guest.

Two teacups, placed on grass mats, concrete benches or worn, wooden tables touched lives.

A simple act, a small tea set, a sweet fragrance became an inspiring story.

I heard Sarah Lanier, the author of Foreign to Familiar share almost 20 years ago and her example is still having an impact on my life. The details of the people served may not all be exactly as she related them, but she did travel the world with tea cups in her backpack, ministering to people everywhere she went as she shared tea with them.

To Ponder:

How can I add a small touch of beauty in the midst of the everyday that would make an impact on someone?
Who could I meet with for an hour to encourage through my undivided attention and loving interest?
What one thing could I do this week to make a small difference in the life of someone in my sphere of influence?

Holes in the floor-heartistry

While visiting the Kalaupapa leper colony on the Hawaiian Island of Molokai, I was deeply impacted by what I saw in the small, historic chapel on the cliffs of the infamous bay where lepers used to be thrown overboard.

There were holes in the floor.

Grotesquely disfigured lepers hid in the lush Hawaiian foliage, intently watching as Father Damien, a 33-year-old Catholic priest, arrived on the remote island of Molokai.  It was 1873 and there was not yet a cure for the dreaded and highly infectious disease that was present in the islands of Hawaii.  Heeding the call to come and serve, and eventually die with the lepers of Molokai, Father Damian left his native Belgium and arrived on the tropical shores.

On his first Sunday, Father Damien prepared for the service and with eager anticipation waited for the congregants to arrive, but only a few sat on the wooden pews.  Mystified, Father Damien asked why more people were not there and was told that many of the residents of the leper colony had been embarrassed to attend.  Due to losing feeling in parts of their bodies, they were unable to prevent themselves from drooling and did not want to expose themselves to ridicule or worse yet, anger from the newly arrived priest.

The following week Father Damien was seen to be hard at work in the small chapel and he encouraged everyone to attend mass that Sunday.  When they arrived they noticed a curious sight.  Large, tropical leaves had been picked and twisted into funnel shapes and were standing upright with their bases pressed through holes in the floor.  Spittoons made of leaves.  Up and down the rows in front of where the parishioners would be sitting, Father Damien had chiseled  holes through the beautiful wooden floor of the chapel to make drains for his makeshift spittoons. 

The comfort of the people was to Father Damien way more important than the beauty of the building.  He disfigured the floor so that castaway people would experience welcome.

As I saw the holes in the floor and heard the history, I was profoundly moved and challenged by Father Damien’s bold and creative act.   This captures the heart of true hospitality.

To ponder:

As I host people, are they more important than the mud prints they may leave on the carpet or the crumbs on the couch?
Would I be willing to lay aside my pride, comfort or embarrassment to invite people home, even if my house is far from perfect?

The heart of hospitality-golden and silver treads-HEARTISTRY

This true story impacted me deeply years ago.  It still captures my heart and the essence of how I want to live (and what I want Heartistry to reflect).

Edith Shaeffer and her husband were pastoring a small, rural church in America during a time of economic difficulty. Desperate, unemployed men would ride the rail cars, stopping at various small towns looking for work. Many times, there would be a knock on the Schaeffer’s door and Edith would open it to find an exhausted, despondent man asking for food. Even though she battled to feed her own family on their small salary, she would ask the hungry man to wait on the porch as she prepared him something to eat. Edith would warm some soup and slice fresh, homegrown tomatoes to make a healthy sandwich. She would send one of her children into the backyard to pick a small flower and a sprig of ivy. Covering a tray with a pretty linen tray cloth, she added a small, lit candle, the tiny flower bouquet and a tasty meal. She included a Gospel of John to give spiritual nourishment and then would carry the beautiful tray out to the waiting man. As she handed the tray to her guest, the grown man would begin to weep. Gratitude for the food was present but he was touched by something far deeper. It was the profound impact of being valued as someone who deserved to receive a tray prepared with such love and care.  Edith’s simple meal on the pretty tray fed both the body and the soul.

This story captures what I call the Golden and Silver Threads of hospitality. Feeding a hungry man is the thick, golden thread of generosity and true hospitality; presenting the food with beauty and creativity to show the value of the recipient is the smaller, silver thread.   And both are needed.  Together they impact others lives deeply.

Living generously with both the “golden and silver threads” present in our lives is what I wish to inspire and equip people to do through Heartistry.

How much longer do you think it took to set a pretty tray than just to hand the cup and sandwich to the waiting man?
How did those additional few minutes impact the man?
How can we make the equivalent effort today?

Silent Light-movie philosophy

Esther never died. She and Marianne devised a way to help Johan come to the conclusion — and the peace of knowing — that the life he was leading before the affair, WAS the life he wanted. The only way for him to realize this was to lose it. (“You don’t know what you got, until you lose it…” John Lennon, Walls and Bridges, 1974).

So…Marianne has someone call and request something from Johann. Johann sets out with Esther. Esther gets out, weeps against the side of the tree and falls to the ground, waiting for Johan to come find her and assume she is dead, after she has taken the ‘medicine” referred to that slows down the pulse.

In on the plot are other members of the Mennonite community who know that Johan needs help getting back to a place of sanity and peace. The doctor tells Johan Esther is dead, the family go through the motions of preparing her for burial. Marianne shows up, ascertains that Johan’s entire focus is on Esther…then goes inside the viewing chamber, as planned between Esther and Marianne…and is thanked by Esther for what she has done for both Johan and her.

No surrealism, magic realism, faith…just two gals getting together and hatching a plan.

End of story. End of film.

let me not critic the movies based on the rules of flim makeing…..let us leave it to METACRTICS.COM……let my talk from an emotional level on what touched me……its the concept of ‘protege ‘…….fiction at it work at best, have created a wonderfull philosophy, in the movie, that-” A bell boy in olden days is the protege of his mater the coincierge”.
This jolts me when i think of the task in hand given over to me.
Will i be able to be a wonderful  coincierge like GUSTAVE to my bell boys jeshua and aaron ???????

The god father -plot and philosophy

1. INCITING INCIDENT

Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) attends his sister’s wedding with his girlfriend Kay Adams (Dianne Keaton) at the Corleone family estate. It’s a high society affair, with all the top Italian families are in attendance. When Kay mentions that Luca Brasi (Lenny Montana), one of the guests, looks like a scary guy, Michael explains that Luca does the dirty work for his father, Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando). He uses strong arm tactics, forcing people to sign contracts with guns to their heads. Kay is visibly stunned. Michael responds, “That’s my family Katie, it’s not me.” (00:22:20)

2. LOCK IN (End of Act One)

After refusing to finance Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo (Al Lettieri) in a new narcotics business venture, Don Vito Corleone is shot down in the street. Michael, during a night on the town with Kay, learns of this from a newspaper headline and rushes to his father’s side – right into the arms of the family that he had worked so hard to distance himself from. (00:45:15)

3. FIRST CULMINATION (Midpoint)

Michael realizes that the attempts on his father’s life are not going to stop. He suggests that his brother Santino “Sonny” Corleone (James Caan), the new Don, set up a meeting between himself and The Turk and Capt. McCluskey (Sterling Hayden), a dirty cop on The Turk’s payroll, in the guise of establishing a truce. But instead, Michael murders The Turk and McCluskey with a planted gun and flees to Italy, where he is protected by “The family”. (01:27:28)

4. MAIN CULMINATION (End of Act Two)

After Santino is murdered in a hail of bullets, Don Vito makes a deal with the rival Italian families to ensure Michael’s safety. Michael returns from Italy and takes his place as the new Don Corleone. (02:16:32)

5. THIRD ACT TWIST

During the ceremony where Michael is to become godfather to his sister’s baby, members of the Corleone gang strike at all the heads of the rival families, murdering the key players. This official ceremony where he is becoming godfather to his niece is in essence also where he officially becomes the true Godfather of the Corleone family, taking back any lost power through a tremendous force of violence and cunning. The Corleone legacy is safe and will live on into the future under the competent guidance of Don Michael Corleone. (02:40:13)

Philosophy
Vito Corleone is the aging don (head) of the Corleone Mafia Family. His youngest son Michael has returned from WWII just in time to see the wedding of Connie Corleone (Michael’s sister) to Carlo Rizzi. All of Michael’s family is involved with the Mafia, but Michael just wants to live a normal life. Drug dealer Virgil Sollozzo is looking for Mafia families to offer him protection in exchange for a profit of the drug money. He approaches Don Corleone about it, but, much against the advice of the Don’s lawyer Tom Hagen, the Don is morally against the use of drugs, and turns down the offer. This does not please Sollozzo, who has the Don shot down by some of his hit men. The Don barely survives, which leads his son Michael to begin a violent mob war against Sollozzo and tears the Corleone family apart.

2) a soldier who wants nothing to do with his fathers don business , is forced to become a don due to circumstances
